What Is a Boiler Economizer?
A boiler economizer is a heat exchanger installed in the flue gas duct, downstream of the boiler. The combustion gases leaving a boiler are still very hot, and that energy goes straight up the stack. The economizer intercepts it and transfers it to the feedwater before the water enters the boiler.
The principle is simple and the effect is twofold. The water arrives hotter, so the boiler has less work to do to turn it into steam and burns less gas. And the flue gas is rejected at a lower temperature, which cuts GHG emissions by the same measure.
This is why an economizer suits a new boiler and an existing fleet equally well: it does not change how the boiler operates, it recovers what the boiler rejects.
Stack, Condensing and Integral Economizers
A stack economizer connects to the flue duct of a boiler already in service. It is the most common retrofit configuration, because it requires no intervention on the boiler itself.
A condensing economizer takes recovery further by cooling the flue gas below its dew point, releasing the latent heat held in the water vapour of the combustion gases.
